Ways You Can Support Friends And Family Members Who Are Struggling

It’s not a surprise that many of us are, or know someone who is, suffering from a mental illness. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, 1 in 6 of youth aged 6-17 experience a mental health disorder each year. That’s a huge number, yet many people struggling with mental illness find it difficult to get help and support. One reason for that is that people often fear being judged. Society makes us think that having a mental illness is something to be ashamed of, when in reality it’s not. A lot of people suffer in silence and avoid seeking help because they fear being seen differently. This can negatively impact their lives because not only does it prevent them from getting treated, but also from leading happy and comfortable lives.

It’s difficult to figure out when a friend or family member is going through something. Most of the time, people who are struggling try to hide it and make it seem like everything is okay. If you know that someone is struggling, or if you realize them acting differently or isolating themselves, ask them if they’re okay. Ask them how they really are. Most times people won’t open up about their feelings or thoughts unless you ask. You might have to ask more than once, but make sure you show them that you genuinely care about them.

Here are some ways you can help those who are struggling:

  • Listen to them without passing any judgements.

  • Tell them that having a mental illness is not something to be ashamed of.

  • Assure them that it is totally okay to get help, and encourage them to do so.

  • Tell them that they will eventually get better.

  • Do not pressure them into doing anything; respect their choices.

  • Some people prefer to cope in silence; respect their personal boundaries.

  • And most importantly, be there for them.

Remember, what they are going through is not easy. It takes so much courage for someone to speak out about what they’re going through. They might not want to talk about it at the moment. But try to be there for them no matter what. Sometimes, all you need is someone by your side.
