Pupils

I once read somewhere
Long ago
That when you look at someone you love
Your pupils get bigger
I remember testing this theory in the lunchroom with friends
Testing to see who truly loved one another
I never spent too much time believing those types of myths
But it wasn’t until I was standing in my room
Alone in the middle of the night
Looking at myself in the mirror
Until I realized something different about myself
My lips were the perfect shape
My eyes the perfect shade of blue
And there seemed to be nothing wrong anymore
All the hours spent hating the face that stared back at me
While dreading having to show it to the world tomorrow
But there they were
The dark depths of my pupils looking straight into my soul
Bigger than they had ever been before
